NESTLED IN THE SERENE HILLS OF APTERA
The “Shell” A building built on a whim perched on a hill top with a panoramic view, looking north it faces the bay of Souda, facing south is the almighty face of the White Mountains that had once been covered with snow on their highest peaks during the summers, but now showing a mauve gleam in the hot months. Looking west is Malaxa a mountainous region and every night the sun would fall behind the void between the mountain ranges and slowly set spreading a tangerine light of flickering ochra. Climbing onto the roof of the “Shell” in the early evenings looking westerly the sunset was complete over Souda bay and in the near distance the small island of Souda is visible at the entrance of the bay. In the middle of August walking outside the “Shell” rising above the sea was the August moon majestic, proud and like a gigantic shining disc it rose. Moon rise was a spectacular moment so close and yet so far almost reachable. Lighting up the sea and the Eastern part of the ancient city of Aptera. In this magical setting resided a family quite oblivious at times to the profound beauty of this spot. The “Shell” erected but unfinished was a haven of circumstances and consequences. Made of hard work sweat, and hope. It became a focal point for family and friends. If only the “Shell” could tell a story. Lazy summers were spent there every one gathered there like bees to the queen. Mother kept fort and visitors were many, the “Shell” surficed many winters and scorching summers. Gatherings galore, festivities, Easter being the crown, whether celebrated inside or outside threre was always room for company. Plenty of chairs and most important tables spread with food and wine. Preparing the lamb for the spit at Easter became a tradition every one joined in each playing their part at this special time of the year. Christina’s laughter penetrated the walls of the “Shell”, her eyes always flickering with joy and mischief. She was like a human magnet and the family gathered around her, stories were told of the past present events discussed all making a tapestry of life. The fields, the olive groves adding to an endless story of life well lived. Name days, birthdays and just ordinary days were celebrated alike. Simple moments of joy sprung out of words told, songs remembered and ‘’mantinades” spoken. Reflecting on years gone by the realization is that buildings do not matter, its the people that count and are remembered. Days shared sunshine and a feeling of belonging are all part of what makes the place precious. A special place to most people whether locals or visitors on holiday. Views and panoramic landscapes stretching as far as the eye can see, vast space nature spread in her glory and magnificence. The “Shell” fixed immovable embracing its occupants, giving shelter from the scorching sun. Summer breezers invading the rooms and doors wide open casting shadows and shapes in the dancing sun light. Winters were short but the “Shell” offered warmth and safety from the elements. North winds blew across from the sea chilling the “Shell” on its rocky surface. Ancient peoples had walked over this place leaving marks of their existence. No place is exempt from the dramas of past lives the history penetrates the land. Like a book the house lives through its chapters with plenty of events to fill its pages. Since 2016 a new chapter started for the “Shell”. Mother past on and ‘’P’’ began a total renovation. Previously unable for various reasons to begin. Mother’s health and disposition was of paramount concern. Seniors do not embrace change as they age and time was also another factor. All kinds of work on all parts of the “Shell” have turned into a villa of ample comforts, now called ‘’Villa Crista”. Villa Crista looks new and the face lift has totally transfomed her outward appearance. The work involved has been challenging the weather during the summers sapping one of energy. Persistance and patience plus extensive planning by ‘’P” has been the key to transformation of the exterior and interior of the property. The family also has been responsive in offering and adding to the essence of Villa Crista!
